Ministry of Interior report on Greek naturalisation law!!

The massive naturalisations predicted by right wing and far right wing party after the voting in of the 2010 Naturalisation law by the then in government Socialist party were just a bad joke. This is the conclusion that one can draw from a recent report (in Greek) published by the Greek Ministry of Interior which shows that total applications so far are approximately 6,000 and those approved are so far in 2010-2011 are 1,100 approximately. in the same period there are about 15,000 co ethnic Greeks from Albania who have naturalised. One wonders whether this testifies to ‘massive naturalisations’ and to a big change in the Greek constituency or rather one should worry because the naturalisation law is not being implemented as it should. but the new government is trying to push ahead to making naturalisation more difficult by lengthening the required number of years from 7 to 10 for first generation immigrants. One wonders how is it that the conservative party New Democracy leading the current governmental coalition is not more worried unemployment or insecurity for all people and rather spends time and energy to try and get Greece to move backwards in such an important issue such as naturalisation of people who are born and raised in Greece or who have lived in Greece for a very long time and wish to stay in this country.
